Codex-Based GMP Certification

GMP certification is a pre-requisite of the HACCP certification scheme. It covers different aspects of the food chain, including production, hygiene, facilities maintenance etc. A Cotecna issued GMP certificate is valid for three years with annual surveillance audits.

What is GMP?

The Codex-Based Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) Certification is considered as the first step towards compliance of food safety requirements. Organizations willing to implement Food Safety standards should comply to the most basic requirements which are known as the Pre-requisite programs (PRP's) or GMP requirements.

Implementation of good manufacturing processes enable organizations to build a solid base of pre-perquisite programmes for developing any higher food safety management systems. The guideline addresses various PRP's like:

  • Construction and layout of buildings
  • Layout of premises and workspace
  • Utilities: air, water, energy
  • Waste disposal
  • Equipment suitability, cleaning and maintenance
  • Management of purchased materials
  • Measures for the prevention of cross contamination
  • Cleaning and sanitizing
  • Pest control
  • Personnel hygiene and employee facilities
  • Rework
  • Product recall procedures
  • Warehousing
  • Product information/consumer awareness
  • Food defence; bio vigilance and bioterrorism

How to get a Codex GMP certificate?

Cotecna can provide certification against the Codex GMP Guidelines. Clients and customers willing to undergo certification needs to complete the application and contract agreement process following which initial or re-certification audits will be carried out. Once the certificate is issued (with a 3 year validity), further surveillance audits will have to be carried out at pre-defined frequencies to maintain the validity of the certificate.
