International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC)

Cotecna is a recognised partner of the International Sustainability Carbon Certification (ISCC) which enables us to offer clients certifications for the ISCC EU and ISCC Plus schemes in selected locations.

What is ISCC?

To reduce the carbon footprint and limit environmental impact, countries are turning towards sustainable energy sources, such as biofuels. A global move towards renewable, low-carbon sources of energy is key to slowing climate change. To address this new market, the EU has created mandatory parameters for all EU member countries for the sustainable production and processing of biomass in the Renewable Energy Directive (RED) (EU-RL 2009/28/EC).

The International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) works towards a greener and livable planet, providing a sustainability certification system that covers the entire supply chain and all kinds of bio-based feedstocks and renewables.

The ISCC scheme establishes a traceability system that enables each participant to source sustainable products from any other certificate holder throughout the supply chain, covering:

  • Farms, plantations or points or origin,
  • First gathering points, country elevator or collecting points,
  • Traders/storage,
  • Processing units,
  • And final products.

ISCC PLUS is a voluntary certification for non-regulated markets and is applicable for circular and bio‑based products, renewables, food, feed, and biofuels outside the EU. All types of agricultural and forestry raw materials, waste and residues, biogas and algae, renewable feedstocks of non‑biological origin (e.g. renewable energy from wind or water), bacteria and carbon capture and utilisation for transport purposes can be certified under this scheme.

ISCC EU certification is applicable for biofuels EU-market and is recognised by the European Commission (EC) to demonstrate compliance with RED and FQD. All types of agricultural and forestry raw materials, waste and residues, biogas and algae can be certified under this scheme.

How to get ISCC certified?

Cotecna provides certification against both the ISCC PLUS and ISCC EU schemes with an annual validity. Organizations willing to undergo the certifications need to register themselves with the ISCC. Upon successful audit and technical review, certificates will be published on the ISCC website directly. Certified organisations will thereafter be able to handle sustainable materials as per scope of Certification accordingly.
